About us and OUR ISLAND FAVES!
Island Cycles & Beach Gear Rentals had been serving Hatteras Island for 26 years when we bought it in June of 2019. We moved here from Utah when we purchased Island Cycles and had never really been on this side of the country before. Soooo, we still feel like tourists! We could tell you our whole story, but we thought it would be more fun to share what we have learned about this Island so far. First off, this place is magic and we are so happy that we went temporarily insane and made the move here. These are all our favorite things that the island has to offer! We have people ask us all the time various questions about the area. Here are our answers!
Our Favorite Fishmarket-
~ We get our fresh fish from Sunrise Seafood Market in Avon. The fish is always fresh and amazing and you could literally lick the floor it's always so clean! That does not mean that the other markets are not good. This is just our go to!
Places to eat -
We are serious foodies. So this is no joke for us!
~ You can never go wrong with Nino's Pizza in Avon! And not just their pizza is good! They have great wings, sandwiches, and salads! We are so lucky they are almost next door to us. We might starve without them!
~ One of our very most favorite places to eat lunch on the Island is Buxton Munch in Buxton. It is only open from 11-4 but is a not miss! Plus it is next door to the liquor store so win win!
~ Oceana's Bistro in Avon is yummy!! They have a really nice outside patio we love to eat on. They have great burgers, grillers, and seafood! They serve breakfast, lunch, and dinner!
~ Pangea Tavern in Avon has amazing food and an awesome beer garden! They take reservations which is awesome when the island is busy! You also get a free walk on the pier with your meal! Do this!
~Rusty's Surf & Turf in Buxton is delicious! Beautiful Restaurant with great service and wonderful food. They take reservations which is also a huge plus!!!
~ Breakwater Restaurant in Hatteras is a beautiful place to eat! They have outside dining on the back deck that overlooks the harbor. Great food and an amazing view!
~ We also love Hatteras Sol Waterside Grill in Hatteras village, it is an amazing dinner spot and the food is soooo goooood! Get there early as there is always a wait!
~ Diamond Shoals Restaurant in Buxton! I can't believe I almost forgot them! Their sushi is soooooo good!!! I am a total sissy when it comes to fish and I have always hated sushi. So even if you hate sushi give this a shot! The surfer girl roll is my fave!
There are so many great places to eat and explore on Hatteras Island. These are just our favorites so far! We will be updating our list as we have time to see and do more things!
Things to do ~ other then bike riding, kayaking, surfing, paddleboarding, and laying on the beach of course!
~ Learn to Kite Board! We recommend OBX Kiteboarding Academy - 252-302-5276
~Learn to Surf! There are so many great places with lessons we can't pick just one! Natural Art, Ride Hatteras, Hatteras Island Boardsports, Endless Summer..... they are all great!
~ If the Papa Wack (Part of Pangea and Koru) theater in AVON is having a concert during your stay go to it! It is a beautiful venue, a great night out, and they always have great music!
~ Mini Golf at Uncle Eddies in Buxton is a fun night but the best part is their homemade custard and cute gift shop! We stop here often on our way home from work for a cone of something delicious.
~ Watch the people fish off one of the piers! Or fish yourself! You may or may not want to do this with children as it is pretty often a rather large shark is caught!
~ Watch the sunset over the sound!
~ Take a day trip to Ocracoke. I know a lot of you are already from places that have Ferry Boats but I love the ferry ride!!! It's almost as much fun for me as Ocracoke itself.
Whatever you do take time to breathe, soak it all in, and enjoy the magic of the Outerbanks.
